Below are excerpts including comments and future plans for the graduates in the Class of 2013:

Jan Colby Anderson, Graduate Diploma in Christian Counseling

(Cooperative program with Ottawa University M.A.C.) (not pictured)

Anne Patryce Boyd, Graduate Diploma in Old Testament Hebrew

I feel as though I am still just beginning this journey and hope to continue at the Seminary in further study sometime in the future. Where the Lord will take me from here is still not clear, but I know that what I have gained has changed my course and set me more surely on a path for a life well lived in the service of God and the furtherance of His kingdom.

Micah John Brechtel, Master of Arts in Biblical Leadership

In response to His call, I will be serving as professional golf Chaplain with FCA Golf. I will also continue to engage in cross-cultural ministry as God leads.

Matthew Jerald Brunk, Master of Arts in Biblical Leadership

I am a volunteer with youth ministry at my church and a full-time Jr. High teacher. I don’t know how God will use my training in the future but I am excited to find out and thankful for every experience at Phoenix Seminary as it has made me a better man of God. (not pictured)

Jesse I. Burke, Master of Divinity in Leadership Development

I currently have the privilege to serve in several different ministries. I am a church consultant for Church Resource Ministries, helping churches gain a greater focus on discipleship. I am also a 2nd Lt. Chaplain Candidate in the Air Force and work with Lumen Deo, an Acts 29 church plant in Prescott, Arizona.

Karen DeMiguel, Graduate Diploma in General Studies

God has called me to a place I never wanted to go: Perryville Prison. Serving the broken, the cast-offs and the truly convicted is a field ripe for the explosion of God’s amazing grace. He continually shows up with mighty power, breaking down walls and healing in ways I had only read about.

Derek James Filley, Master of Divinity in Biblical Communication

My plans for the future involve finding a vocational pastoral position and serving however the Lord Leads.

Edie Rochelle Fluker, Master of Divinity in Leadership Development

Since [starting seminary] I have resigned from my job, acquired work teaching abstinence and reproductive health to teens and pre-teens, changed my original degree program, joined the U.S. Army Reserves as a Chaplain Candidate, and thus entered a complex emotional, physical, and spiritual journey of answering God’s call to serve him though the work of chaplaincy. In the future, I plan to pursue further training in order to offer the truth of God to the world through a career in chaplaincy.

Kevin M. Gage, Master of Divinity in Biblical Communication

I don’t exactly know what I am going to do from here, but I now know what I can do, and with brokenness as my strength and with Christ in me, I will strive towards His mission until the end of my days.

Shirrelle Denise Gordon, Graduate Diploma in Biblical & Theological Studies

I will continue to trust God, listen for His voice, and obey Him as I diligently pursue His ultimate purpose and plans for me. I look forward to spending the rest of my life serving God and others wherever my journey leads me! Phoenix Seminary has equipped me to be a good servant and faithful servant!

Lewis Preston Hancock Jr., Master of Divinity in Biblical Communication

Over the past ten years, studying at Phoenix Seminary and serving at Red Mountain Community Church, my walk with the Lord has grown deeper and more personal. I have not merely learned information about Jesus, I know Him better. I am currently praying through my future, whether the Lord would call be to be a Lead Pastor or whether He wants me to continue to lead and teach within the context of being an Executive Pastor.

Michael William Hodson, Graduate Diploma in Christian Counseling

, Cooperative program with Ottawa University M.A.C.
After graduation from Phoenix Seminary, I plan to start classes at Fuller Theological Seminary Southwest in the fall of 2013 to pursue a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy. I do not know God’s full plan for me yet, but… I look forward to the next chapter God has written for my life as I pursue a counseling career.

James Eric Hoxworth, Master of Divinity in Biblical Communication

I am thankful to Covenant Community Church and Camelback Bible Church who allowed me to work full-time and glean a large amount of ministry experience while going to seminary—I’m grateful for that gift!

Charles T. Jennings, Master of Divinity in Counseling & Family

Charles is currently enrolled in the Banner Health Clinical Pastoral Education Program.

Thomas Harrison Leach, Master of Divinity in Counseling & Family

As a ‘counseling’ pharmacist, I can minister where I am at; but I have felt my heart strings pulled to hospital ministry with children and possibly hospice ministry.

Edward R. Lutz, Master of Arts in Biblical Leadership

As I continue in full-time church ministry [at Highlands Church], I pray I will be able to model my ministry after their example and to move people into a deeper relationship with Jesus.

Amy Mescher, Master of Arts in Biblical Leadership

My husband, Paul, and I are currently serving as volunteer leaders for marriage and premarriage at Sun Valley in Tempe. We look forward to seeing what doors God may open for us in ministry in the future.

Michael David Mock, Master of Divinity in Biblical Communication

I am finishing up an internship at Fellowship of Grace (PCA) and plan on entering the pastoral ministry full time as either an Associate Pastor or Assistant Pastor.

Beth L. Morris, Master of Divinity in Counseling & Family

Beth is looking forward to ministering to underprivileged women in the valley.

Sean Aaron Mortenson, Master of Divinity in Leadership Development

Upon graduating, I will continue to serve as a pastor with Redemption Church in Phoenix and continue learning.

Carlyle Don Naylor, Doctor of Ministry

(Doctoral Project: Enhancing Emotional Intelligence for Spiritual Formation)
Through much research into emotional intelligence and a two-year study at Red Mountain Community Church I was pleased to arrive at four important variables that seem necessary for progressive spiritual formation. This will help me to be a more patient shepherd and leader! I hope I can pass the learning along to others that have a heart for transformed, Jesus-centered living.

Jeffrey Lee Phillips, Master of Divinity in Biblical Communication

The depth of the biblical, theological and pastoral knowledge I have gained is invaluable and will enable me to serve God and His Kingdom more effectively as I follow His calling to pastor His people and reach the lost with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

John-Mark Rieser, Master of Arts in Biblical Leadership

Currently, I am an elder and pastor at a downtown church. We care a great deal about orphan care (James 1:27), the arts, and Christ-pointing community involvement. We also place a great emphasis on culturally relevant theology and Christian discipleship. I believe it is important to engage our current cultural crisis with a Gospel-saturated worldview—this is why I help host an apologetics radio show. I intend to devote more time to the show after I graduate.

Matthew Craig Robards, Master of Divinity in Biblical Communication

My future will be in teaching, whether in the pastorate or in the classroom.

Dean Frederick Saxton III, Master of Divinity in Biblical Communication

After graduation, Filomena and I will continue at La Vita House: International Study Center for Faith and Culture, a ministry reaching out to international students at the University of Arizona. La Vita hosts dinners, lectures, and cultural events that promote the practice of faith, cultural understanding and a biblical world-view. We hope to expand and deepen our work by making theological educational resources accessible to the UA and to the Tucson community. We hope to start a church that would meet the needs of the international and unchurched student community.

Lewis R. Sloan, Master of Divinity in Biblical Communication

I hope to serve the church of Jesus Christ in a manner that supersedes any denomination or tradition which is void of a clear and distinct call from the Lord Jesus Christ for me as a uniquely gifted follower of His will. Simply put, my greatest desire is to serve Him exactly how He desires, with no ungodly motive such as money, human expectation, fleshly security, or any other hindrance, no matter how subtle or seemingly insignificant.

Kyle Christopher Smith, Master of Arts in Biblical Leadership

Thank you to Grace Community Church for believing in me and starting me on this path, to Don and Marcia Christensen for investing in the next generation, and to Missio Dei Communities for allowing me to continue my education as part of my job.

Mark Staples, Master of Arts in Biblical Leadership

(not pictured)
As a new Lead Pastor I’m excited I get to continue that legacy by entrusting to others the great truths of Scripture in both my words and my actions.

Samuel P. Varghese, Master of Arts in Biblical Leadership

Sam is a Youth Pastor at Ridge Church in Prescott Valley.

Christopher David Fuzzell Warrington, Master of Divinity in Leadership Development

Currently, I fill the role of CEO in a non-profit organization, The Christian Chain, which has that mission as its focus. All glory, majesty, honor and praise be to The Lord our God, now and forever.

Mark Jerome Williams, Master of Divinity in Leadership Development

Tammy and I will relocate to Oklahoma City, in proximity to our son, daughter, and granddaughter, and I will begin a bi-vocational ministry, leading direct response fundraising for Feed the Children and serving at Anglican Church of the Holy Cross.

KINGDOM IMPACT: Phoenix Seminary Hosts Religious Delegation from Kazakhstan

(from left to right) Dr. Malcolm Hartnell; Dr. Yuriy Novgorodov; Dr. Bing Hunter, Andreykin Igor, Dr. Steve Johnson, Dr. Aiman Rustembekova; Joshua Anderson, and Khassan Amankulov.

On March 12, the seminary hosted a six-person delegation from Kazakhstan. Invited by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs, arrangements for the group’s visit were coordinated by the Arizona Council for International Visitors. The delegation, which was accompanied by two translators, consisted of the Director of AREAL, an NGO which functions as a “Religious Issues Information Center;” a Muslim imam; an Evangelical Pastor who works with the Association of Religious Organizations of Kazakhstan; and a Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kazakhstan. Seminary faculty, staff and students interacted with the group and many insights were shared (in both directions) on theological education, intercultural issues and the nature of inter-religious dialogue. The group received material on the structure and content of theological education at Phoenix Seminary. Kazakhstan, a land-locked country with 160 different ethnicities, is the world’s 9th largest nation. It became independent just 20 years ago with the breakup of the Soviet Union. The government grants religious freedom, although groups must be a certain size to register with the government. The major religious communities are: Muslim (47%), Russian Orthodox (44%), Protestant Christian (2%) and Others (7%). Asked about the experience, David Massey, a PS staff member, said, “It was such a privilege to meet this group.” Others spoke about how their understanding of the circumstances of evangelical Christians in central Asia had been expanded.

Phoenix Seminary Achieves Regional Accreditation

On November 1, 2012, the Board of Trustees of The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association (NCA) of Colleges and Schools voted to grant Phoenix Seminary full regional accreditation, effective immediately. HLC accreditation provides public certification of institutional quality and comes only after the institution opens itself to extensive outside examination by experienced evaluators familiar with accrediting requirements and with higher education. For Phoenix Seminary, that process began in 2006.

“This is a significant achievement for a relatively small and young institution and represents the hard work of our entire seminary community,” said Dr. Darryl DelHousaye, President of Phoenix Seminary. “We have been accredited for many years by the Association of Theological Schools (ATS), the primary source for accreditation of theological education in the US and Canada. Now we are blessed to add ‘Accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association’ to our academic reputation.”

Phoenix Seminary, located at 4222 East Thomas Road, in Phoenix, is the only regionally and professionally accredited graduate theological school with its main campus located in Arizona. Other Arizona institutions with HLC regional accreditation include Grand Canyon University, Arizona State University, the University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University.
