As Phoenix Seminary nears the end of our 2010 fiscal year (June 30, 2010), we are asking God, through people like you, to provide much needed financial resources at this critical time.

The seminary is committed to building an annually-balanced revenue and expense model, we have made much progress. However, until we reach this goal together, Phoenix Seminary needs your help now!

The Current Challenge

In order to meet our budget and cash flow needs, $1,050,000 is needed by June 30, 2010. This need is significant and immediate.

Will you prayerfully join me in asking how God might use us at this pivotal time to help Phoenix Seminary meet its financial challenges?

Each dollar invested in Phoenix Seminary helps us sustain and train our students. We thank God for you every day. We know that God, through his people, is more than able to provide the resources that we need by the end of the fiscal year.

Ephesians 3:20 – “Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us.”

Under the same wing,

Yes, May is finally here—season of final exams, research papers due, and ultimately graduation. For the students whose names are on the invitation to Phoenix Seminary’s commencement ceremony, no month could be sweeter.

The word graduate derives from the Latin gradus. The world literally means “step” as in steps on a staircase or in a procedure. At one time the phrase gradus ad Parnassum was common, referring to the steps it took to reach the summit of a mountain range in central Greece. Greek mythology held that Mount Parnassus was sacred to Apollo and the nine Muses, the inspiring deities of the arts. Hence, it was first in the arts in which books began to be written as manuals for students in reaching higher levels of skill and competency in their craft. Such a book was often nicknamed a gradus.

What’s the point? Inherent in the word gradus is the notion that one keeps encountering next steps in honing their knowledge and skills. It means that no learner ever ceases being a student. There is always another gradus to take. As students complete their degrees at Phoenix Seminary, commencement represents completion of one more gradus in being mature disciples of Jesus Christ, servants of his church, and ambassadors of Christ to the world. There are always more steps to take.

Congratulations to our graduates. Keep climbing.

- Chip Moody,
Dean of Students

According to recent research, more than 92% of all churches in the United States are currently segregated, with more than 80% of their membership representing a single race or ethnic group. Yet in an increasingly diverse and cynical society, people are no longer finding credible the message of God’s love for all people when it is preached from segregated pulpits. The emerging Multi-Ethnic church movement aims to change that.

Mark DeYmaz (D. Min. 07) is the founding pastor of the Mosaic Church of Central Arkansas (www.mosaicchurch.net), a multi-ethnic and diverse church in Little Rock where people from more than 30 nations worship together. He has become a recognized leader in the Multi-Ethnic church movement. His book, Building a Healthy Multi-ethnic Church (Jossey-Bass/Leadership Network, 2007), provides the Biblical mandate for the multi-ethnic church and outlines seven core commitments required to bring it about. In 2008, Mark’s book was chosen as a finalist for a Christianity Today Book of the Year Award and for a Resource of the Year Award sponsored by Outreach Magazine, nominated in the Pastoral Leadership category.

Mark is a co-founder of the Mosaix Global Network (www.mosaix.info), an organization dedicated to inspiring unity and diversity in the local church throughout North America. In addition, he is also a contributing editor for Leadership Journal and he posts weekly on his blog, Glue, at www.markdeymaz.com.

Mark and his wife Linda have four children: Zack, Emily, Will and Kate.

Phoenix Seminary is often referred to as the biggest secret in Arizona. While that may be a bit of an exaggeration, the practical truth is that there are a lot of people in Phoenix who don’t know anything about Phoenix Seminary.

How is this possible in the age of mass communication? The answer is actually quite simple!

Making Phoenix Seminary’s mission and vision more widely known takes marketing, advertising, public relations and event planning, all of which require increased enrollment and financial commitments. In a struggling economy, these resources are not readily available.

Phoenix Seminary has many wonderful stories to tell. Stories of how God is using our students and alumni in every time zone around the world to transform lives and build His kingdom. In many cases, these are miraculous stories of what God is doing through Phoenix Seminary to impact our culture.

Here is how you can help us get the word out:

Pray for God’s provision to make this possible, even in a “down” economy.

Tell your friends about Phoenix Seminary. Talk about us.

Seek opportunities in your church to promote Phoenix Seminary.

Invite someone to visit Phoenix Seminary and experience the great work that occurs here every day (and come with them).

Encourage potential students to consider Phoenix Seminary for their post-graduate theological education.

“Scholarship with a shepherd’s heart” is alive and well at Phoenix Seminary. Please help us get the word out!

Romans 10:14

On March 29-31, 2010, a team from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools evaluated Phoenix Seminary, for regional accreditation. HLC uses the same standards for all schools in the region—in our case, the same criteria applied to Arizona State University and the University of Arizona, for example. The Seminary prepared for the visit for over two years. During their campus visit, team members reviewed a 400-page study of the school’s compliance with HLC accrediting criteria and interviewed Board members, faculty, staff, students and alumni and studied seminary policy and financial documents, gaining an accurate picture of the quality of the institution. Although the Commission’s final decision concerning the Seminary’s regional accreditation will be announced in the summer, we are encouraged by the team’s oral report.

Phoenix Seminary already has its professional accreditation from the Association of Theological Schools (ATS), but pursuing HLC accreditation demonstrates Phoenix Seminary’s continued commitment to excellence in theological education, preparing students for effective ministry. HLC accreditation will open up new opportunities for our alumni seeking post-graduate studies in the United States and abroad. It will also allow us to partner more fully with other regionally accredited institutions in joint programs. The certification will also assist missionary graduates in certain regions by facilitating visa and “tent-making” opportunities. Lastly, HLC accreditation will provide our students with additional financial aid and scholarship opportunities and will enable the seminary to pursue grants from foundations and other organizations.

Pursuing HLC accreditation has been a busy and exciting time for the seminary; and we are so thankful for your continued prayers as we look forward to hearing the Commission’s final decision this summer.
