For not he who commends himself is approved, but whom the Lord commends. 2 Corinthians 10:18
Maybe you’re a bit shaken in confidence are in your life right now- as a husband or wife, as a parent, as a Christian.. .or maybe just as a human being you feel a bit like a dirt bag. What has shaken you up? An apparent failure? Criticism? Tiredness, and a sense of hopelessness that it isn’t going to get any better? Let me replace some common misbeliefs-lies we tell our-selves-with some statements of truth which we should be telling ourselves:
(1)It isn’t necessary for me to be liked by everyone. (2) I don’t have to earn anyone’s approval or acceptance. (3) I’m a child of God. I’m deeply loved by Him, and I’ve been forgiven by Him; therefore I am acceptable- and I accept myself. (4) If somebody doesn’t like me, I can live with it. I don’t have to work feverishly to get him to change his mind. (5) Jesus died on the cross for me so I can be free from the myth that other people decide my worth and success.
Now that we’ve established that it’s not other people who determine our effectiveness or worth…where are you in life? Do you believe you’re doing what God wants you to be doing? Whether it’s encouraging, serving, supporting, teaching, praying, counseling, or whatever-are you doing it! How do you feel about what you’re doing? How does God feel about what you’re doing? Is He being glorified? Do you see Him affirming you by giving evidence that the lives of others are being affected by what you’re doing?
